中國空軍去年迎來首架大型運輸機運-20的正式服役，為解放軍戰略投送能力帶來關鍵性進展。運-20總設計師唐長紅、同時也是大陸全國政協委員日前披露，運-20安裝國產發動機已經有了時間表，大約在明年或後年就可以看見這架中國航空工業自主研發的新一代噴氣式重型軍用大型運輸機，裝著「陸製心臟」執行任務。

運-20的官方研發代號是「鯤鵬」，由西安飛機製造廠研發，最大載荷量達73噸，可運送大陸目前最大的ZTZ99式戰車，其搭載40噸貨物時航程為7800公里，滿載航程則為4500公里。2013年1月26日完成首飛成功；2016年7月6日，空軍舉行運-20授裝接裝儀式正式入役，讓大陸成為繼俄羅斯和美國之後，第3個有能力研發國產重型軍用運輸機的國家。

事實上，運-20作為一款貨運平台，可以開發成多種系列化的專業平台，例如民用貨機型號運20F-100、空中加油機以及預警機等。此外，《中國日報》報導，中國正研發「可從飛機上發射」的火箭，將衛星送入太空，戰時可迅速補充被敵方摧毀的衛星，而這種新型火箭將可通過運-20來發射。

現今服役的運-20仍使用前蘇聯於1970年代製造的舊型D-30KP發動機，目前中國正全力研製渦扇-20發動機成為該機的全新心臟。唐長紅指出，運-20入役已達8個多月的時間，目前從空軍反饋回來的信息是「非常滿意」，「運-20的成功，意義不僅僅是一架飛機，更重要的是標誌著我們國力的提升」。他進一步表示，大概在明年或者後年，就能看到裝著國產發動機的運-20了。

過去有航空專業人士指出，渦扇-20短艙和結構類似於美國CFM56-7發動機和GE90發動機，並以渦扇-10「太行」發動機為基礎自行研制，屬於大涵道比渦扇發動機，其後續型號還可作為大型客機、新型雙發中型運輸機、飛翼布局遠程隱身轟炸機和第二代遠程反潛巡邏機的主要動力選擇。

另外有趣的是，唐長紅與殲-20的總設計師楊偉，以及殲-15副總設計師是同班同學，三人皆在1982年畢業於西北工業大學空氣動力學專業。而運-20、殲-20、殲-15分別是中國在運輸機、戰鬥機、艦載機三個領域的最新最尖端的代表機種。唐長紅說，作為同學，平時大家在各自遇到難題時也會互相交流。
