日前印度超過百萬商家聯合抵制可口可樂及百事可樂等碳酸飲料，正值乾旱的泰米爾納德邦表示，上個雨季我們面臨降雨量嚴重不足，再也無法忍受這些外國企業在這片缺水的土地上，恣意取用水資源來做碳酸飲料。

位於印度南部的泰米爾納德邦，人口比英國總人口還多，根據英國《衛報》指出，為響應抵制活動，以本地自產的飲料代替國際品牌。其中一個參與抵制的商業協會Vanigar Sangam表示，「這些外國企業正在用罄我們稀有的水資源，而我們的農業正飽受乾旱之苦。」

國際組織「印度資源中心」（India Resource Center）的Amit Srivastava分析，一瓶小瓶可樂需用1.9公升的水來製造，而碳酸飲料所需要的蔗糖對印度來說也是一大問題。甘蔗是需水量大的農作物，並不適合種植於印度。研究報告指出，可口可樂是印度蔗糖的最大買家，百事可樂則是位居第三，若將甘蔗的需水量列入考量，一瓶可樂需由400公升的水來製造。

由於可口可樂及百事可樂計劃在印度擴展營運，此次的抵制行動將只是個開端。代表多家飲料製造業者的「印度飲料協會」（IBA）表示，對於這次的抵制行為感到失望，可口可樂及百事可樂提供了泰米爾納德邦2000戶家庭工作機會，也有多達5000戶人家間接受惠，IBA希望消費者能擁有選擇的權利。秘書長Arvind Varma也說，「這樣的舉動對於印度的形象以及長期的經濟會有所傷害。」
